Running for St. Jude

Beaux and I have been doing something for the past several years that combines two things we love, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and running. Actually, it may be stretching it to say that Beaux loves running, but I do. Well, most of the time. I'm sure his answer changes depending on what day of the week it is. But I know I can say for sure that we do both love St. Jude!

How can you not love a place that does such life-changing for children? Not only are some of the best doctors in the world at this hospital, but groundbreaking research in cancer prevention and treatment is done there as well. The survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of childhood cancer, has increased from 4% in 1962 when St. Jude was founded to 94% today. In fact, the overall survival rate for childhood cancer has risen from 20% to 80% since the hospital opened in 1962! Wow! And did you know that no family pays for treatment while at St. Jude? Whatever insurance does not pay, St. Jude pays for the rest. And that includes transportation, food, and housing for families.

St. Jude believes that all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Now all of this is pretty amazing, but it’s not cheap. The daily operating cost is $1.9 million dollars a day, and 75% of that is paid for by public donations. 13% is covered by insurance, and the other 12% comes from grants.

Running for St. Jude

If you are like me, I didn't really know that much about St. Jude before Beaux and I got involved. But now that I do, I am simply amazed by their work and the generosity of others. Beaux and I don't have small children of our own, but there are many children of our friends and family whom we love so much. We are grateful these children we love are healthy, and so we are happy to do what we can so that others can have the same chance at life our little loved ones have had.

Beaux and I will run the St. Jude Marathon again this year as St. Jude Heroes. That is the name of the fundraising program for the hospital, but the true heroes are the kids being treated there. 100% of the money we raise will go to St. Jude, and we take care of all of our own expenses to participate in this event.

Reed Insurance has a team this year and would greatly appreciate your gift to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, if you are able. I can assure you no amount is too small and every dollar does go to a great cause.
